Volunteers & Judges

INSPIRE EACH CHILD’S PASSION FOR LEARNING AT 2024 ECOBOT CHALLENGE DAY!

As a measure of safety for our event participants, all volunteers are required to undergo a background check. Harris County Department of Education is required by Texas Education Code Chapter 22, Subchapter C to review the criminal history of applicants, employees, independent contractors, student teachers, and certain volunteers, including AmeriCorps members. The Department will also conduct a national sex offender inquiry, state of residence and state of service checks, and a fingerprint-based FBI check as per the Serve America Act (45 CFR §2540.200 - §2540.207). The information requested is necessary to comply with the above.

2024 CHALLENGE DAY VOLUNTEER NEEDS:

Judges
Judges navigate between teams’ positions and are directly involved with reviewing teams’ performances. Specifically, judges make a fun, friendly visit to each team to view their robot mission and game models, ask questions, and provide positive feedback. Judges work in pairs and evaluate teams on presentation style/content, robot skills and communication/teamwork. No specific robotics experience is required, however a familiarity with the Ecobot game rules and objectives is needed and will be provided prior to Challenge Day.

Administration
The administration team will work in various areas to support overall event logistics including team registration, volunteer registration, greeters and volunteer room monitors. This team will manage all activities at the check-in tables and provide direction, assistance and information to teams, coaches and volunteers. Additional tasks include welcoming student teams to the event and helping to collect and hand out registration materials to coaches. Also, these volunteers provide information about event layout – particularly to general public attending the event.

Team Escorts/Liaisons
Team escorts will help greet teams, coaches and chaperones at the main check in area and will direct them to their tables on the competition floor. Escorts help keep the event flowing and on time. These volunteers act as an interface point for team questions and can help locate the best resource to answer those questions and fulfill those needs.

Monitors
Monitors will help facilitate pedestrian traffic flow to ensure it is smooth and uncongested, as well as monitor the audience throughout the facility. These are primarily roaming roles and includes the managing of traffic flow, security and safety issues and other elements of the facility.

Lab Assistants
Lab Assistants work in the Eco-Genius Lab to help students with hands-on experiments, manage traffic flow and ensure the safety of the students with various equipment. These are primarily stationary roles with lots of interaction with students.
